As in most sports, origin is somewhat of an innocuous term. Suffice it to say, Collegiate Water Skiing probably got it's start about the same time that ole Ralph Samuelson strapped on that pair of longboards, back in Minnesota. However, our first formal reports of a "collegiate element" come from Ralph's cousin "Barefoot" Stew McDonald (just kidding Stew) who insists he was both the organizer and, also, a participant in the first collegiate tournament, which was held at Cypress Gardens, Florida circa 1948. With rules "made up on the starting dock" the sport evolved into a series of "team" tournaments, culminating in a Southern Collegiate Championships. While only Florida schools competed at that time, these championships have been held continuously since then and , according to Stew, "this tournament is the 2nd oldest continuous tournament in the world. Second only to the U.S. Nationals". |

The Midwest region has grown exponentially since it's start in 1979. The region was little back then with just over 5 teams. Bowling green and Ohio University were the power houses at the time. By the late 80's the region had grown tremendous seeing over 10 teams. Michigan State was the power house and start what would become a 13 year streak of National Championship appearances. By the mid-90's the Midwest was setting a precedence having 18 schools and a Regional Tournament of over 150 skiers. Presently there are 47 member schools, 28 that are active, and over 750 skiers making the Midwest Region the largest region out of all 4. |
